For as long as I can remember, I have been obsessed with leadership development. In every professional role I have ever had, I always felt that developing myself, and others, into leaders was the secret sauce that helped our teams be successful.
The Why
I was once told by a more seasoned leader to “not expect something from someone who couldn’t give it to me.” She was referring to my boss at the time, from whom I was desperately wanting coaching and mentoring, since I had just been promoted into a director role. In my mind it seemed reasonable to expect this from my supervisor, who was a well respected leader in the organization. What I eventually realized is that he was great at playing his role as a leader, but teaching someone to be a leader is an entirely different skillset. Thus, I had to take things into my own hands.
The How
The methods I used included books, podcasts, articles, courses, and pretty much any content I could find. I believe in leadership development so much, I often created opportunities for myself and my colleagues to learn about leadership as well. This included coordinating a leadership lunch-and-learn series, hosting workshops for teams, providing one-on-one coaching, among others. I have the heart of a teacher, a coach, a mentor, and a leader. So I offered to others what I had always wanted myself.
The Future
As you can tell, this has truly been an obsession in my life, but one I have loved with my whole being. Now, I look forward to sharing my knowledge, experiences, lessons, and passion with others on this beautiful journey we call leadership.
